Registering Your Business

In the State of South Carolina, If your business is a corporation, limited partnership, limited liability company or limited liability partnership you are required to register your new business with the Secretary of State.

The Department of Revenue in South Carolina also requires new businesses to register. Some small businesses that are service-related and not selling goods and products, may not have to be registered. If your new business will have employees, you will be required to register to withhold income tax from employee wages.

The South Carolina Employment Security Commission also requires you to register to report and pay unemployment insurance for your employees. You also may be required to register with the Workers' Compensation Commission.

The city or county where you locate your business may require you to obtain a local business license. Certain types of businesses may be required to be registered with other state agencies.
